Pencil Portrait Artist

Typical Pencil Portraits

As a pencil portrait artist I have found the portrait in all its forms to be a priority in my art. I enjoy the challenge, where conventional values such as pleasing, beautiful and aesthetic need not be a measure for determining the value of art. Being true to what is real, and an appreciation for the individual is what makes portraiture so interesting.

The value of a portrait lies in its true depiction of the subject’s personality and disposition at that point in time.

If you are interested in commissioning a pencil portrait artist to do someone special, consider reality over convention and make sure you have the appropriate photographs to uphold that image.

The value of a portrait lies in its true depiction of the subject’s personality and disposition at that point in time.

If you are interested in commissioning a portrait of someone special, consider reality over convention and make sure you have the appropriate photographs to uphold that image.

The portrait can be presented in a number of ways. Depending on the image you wish to convey and the photographs you have, there are various types of portraits you can choose from. See Types of Portraits

All portraits are guaranteed to be a true-to-life representation of the photo you supply. For examples of single, family, group and montage studies see Portrait Gallery

By now you probably have a good idea of what portrait you want. But before you make a definite decision have a look at the following: Price List and Order Procedures

"Art is a subject that is generally accepted for what it is.

That is, until you have to think about it"

Options

Background.

In most cases the background is generally muted with little detail. This is done primarily to emphasise the subject. In the case of studies that are context or environment related the background is a muted rendition of a photograph you have supplied. For further information on the background review the section on Portrait Types.

Framing.

All commissioned studies are sold unframed. The original artwork is protected with a fixative to prevent smudging. However, this will not protect the artwork totally. It should be handled with care and framed behind glass.

To assist you with how to frame the portrait I, as a pencil portrait artist have structured a list of some points you should keep in mind. The colour of the mounting and type of mould (Outer Frame) is a matter of choice. However, I recommend you consider the following:

Drawing of Venus
  • The mount surrounding a 505x365 portrait should be approximately 120mm or 4½ “ wide.

  • Although non-reflective glass is frequently used, I recommend that you rather use clear glass.

  • If the final framed study exceeds one meter or 38” use two wall-hooks to carry it’s the weight.

  • If the hanging height is critical use steel wire instead of nylon cored. Because the nylon core will stretch in time.

  • Do not hang the framed artwork in direct sunlight.

Labels.

On request a ‘context related’ label can be added. This context related label could be the subject’s name, a cryptic description of the particular event being portrayed (where applicable), date, a quote, poem or something similar.

There are two types of labels you can use.
1) Is a label that is inserted into the mount, or on to the actual frame.
2) Is added by hand to the bottom right of the original study.

If you opt for the second option, it should be short and fitting. Please make a note the wording required on your application. On my reply proposal I will give you an example of the hand-drawn wording for your approval.
